AboutSharon's Life

On the IssuesWorking for you

From a young age, Sharon Moriwaki has acted on behalf of the people. She has fought for affordable housing, helped protect our elderly, and worked to reduce crime and homelessness. A Democrat and a powerful and effective community leader for decades, Sharon is ready to represent you in the State Senate.
  • Build housing for residents (not outsiders).
  • Help kupuna remain at home.
  • Reduce crime, including drug-induced.
  • Support crackdown on tourists illegally renting residential homes.
  • Build “micro unit” projects to help homeless.
  • Build homes for teachers on school land.
  • Help keiki by expanding pre-kindergarten education.
  • Improve urban life through parks, open space, and protected ocean views.
Senator Moriwaki stood with AARP at the Capitol Rotunda to discuss legislation and learn about their StopRxGreed campaign. Mahalo to AARP for the crucial advocacy that they do!

Throughout her career, Sharon Moriwaki has held the powerful accountable and worked collaboratively with diverse groups to get things done for people. She will be our voice in the Senate—one that reminds us to care for each other!

Sharon's Early YearsFrom the community and for the community

Sharon’s life began in the Sheridan area

Sharon spent summers with her family at Ala Moana Beach Park. She strongly believes it is and should remain our “People’s Park”—not just public land that government can alter to serve ultra-luxury units lining Ala Moana Boulevard.

Sharon is a lifelong leader with a proven track record of getting things done.

Sharon served as Kaimuki High School student body secretary.

For decades, Sharon has effectively organized others for change

Returning home with a doctorate and law degree, Sharon networked with other members of the Hawaii Commission on the Status of Women and organizations to further our state’s advancement toward full equality.

Sharon served as an award-winning personnel director under Governor John Waihee

Sharon’s love for the community is deep and has never wavered

As Kakaako United’s founding president and a Kakaako resident for over a decade, Sharon partnered with other organizations and people to march to the Capitol armed with proposed legislation to increase community representation on the government body that oversees Kakaako development, stopping residential high-rises on Kakaako’s shoreline.

Advocating for the people!

Sharon’s passionate advocacy for community included caring for the Makiki Stream and ahupaa. The program received the City’s Good Neighborhood Award for “environmental team leadership.” Her leadership went beyond our district borders to build a statewide network that led to Hawaii’s strongest-in-the-nation commitment to clean energy

“ Somewhere inside of all of us is the power to change the world. ”
