Waikiki Design Guidelines, Tourism Townhall

September 22, 2021

Aloha Neighbor,

A reminder to those interested in Waikiki and tourism, two important happenings you might want to join:

Waikiki Special District Design Guidelines.   The City Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) is proposing updates to the Waikiki Special District Design GuidelinesLearn more at DPP’s informational briefing to the Committee on Zoning and Planning on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 9:00 am.  See the agenda (Item 4 under informational briefing) here and the updated draft (includes sea level rise and flood risk as well as bicycling amenities, etc.) and current guidelines here.  Special districts such as Waikiki were established to guide development to protect and enhance the physical and visual aspects of those areas for the public.  Guidelines are created to better illustrate the objectives and design controls of the district.

Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) Oahu Destination Management Plan.  Rep Adrian Tam and I invite you to join us for a virtual town hall with the HTA this Friday, September 24 at 5:30 pm. Learn and discuss HTA’s reset for tourism – focusing on regenerative tourism for Hawaii.  As you may have heard, HTA has pledged to decrease the total number of visitors to Oahu to a manageable level by controlling the number of visitor accommodations and exploring changes to land use, zoning and airport policies.  See other details of their plan for Oahu in their Oahu Destination Management Plan.  Join the meeting and discussion this Friday at this link.

Take care & stay safe!
