Happy Holidays!

December 25, 2020

Christmas is most truly Christmas
when we celebrate it
by giving the light of love
to those who need it the most.

–RUTH CARTER STAPLETON

During this holy season amidst the fears and challenges we face, may we share the joy, love, hope and peace in caring for one another.  Mahalo to the “angels” who give to help others.  Two of ours from the district above: (left to right) Dave Moskowitz of Waikiki standing by the tree with beautiful ornaments- some family heirlooms—that he donated to Waikiki Community Center for all to enjoy; and Dr. Klaus Radtke and his menuhune of his organization, Aloha Hawaii Onipaa, who put together 100 Christmas gifts to share with those in need. Merry Christmas to All!

HOW TO HOST A VIRTUAL PARTY
Who says you can’t host a party during covid? Sure you can — virtually! There are so many ideas you can do over Zoom. Here are some Zoom-y ideas:
  • Family Christmas Pajama Portrait 2020:  Send everyone the same pair of PJs to take a photo of the group on Zoom.
  • Holiday Movie Night: Use Netflix Party or another streaming service to watch a Christmas movie together over Zoom.
  • Game Night: Choose a game you can play online together, eg charades or team trivia.
  • Christmas Crafting: Encourage kids who may be stuck at home to “help” decorate with paper snowflakes, popcorn tree trimming, or bead and pipe cleaner ornaments.
  • Cookie Decorating Party: Send each family a cookie-decorating kit or gingerbread-house-making kit to get creative together on Zoom.
  • Let’s Start with Your Virtual Invitation: Track RSVP’s. Upload a photo. You want music too? Listen to some sample invitations here.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING
The city provides automated curbside green waste collection to more than 160,000 homes on O‘ahu.
  • For those with green carts, please remove all Christmas tree decorations and cut the tree to fit inside the cart with the lid closed.  Cut the tree into lengths up to three feet and trim branches to ensure it will fall freely from the cart during collection.
  • For those with gray carts, trees with tinsel or flocking should be cut, bagged and disposed in the cart.
  • For households with manual curbside collection, cut the tree into lengths up to three feet, bundle and place at the curb on your normal refuse day.
  • Residents may drop off whole Christmas trees at the nearest Refuse Convenience Center (except for Wahiawa Convenience Center) or at the Kapaa Transfer Station in Kailua.  At no cost, residents may drop off trees with no flocking or tinsel at the composting facility in Wahiawa.
  • Condominiums and commercial buildings may deliver large loads of Christmas trees directly to the composting facility – tip fees will be waived over the holidays.  To arrange these deliveries, please contact ENV’s Refuse Division at 768-3200.
