COVID-19 Update – Aid Package for Hawaii

March 29, 2020

Aloha Neighbors,

With the growing numbers of positive cases, please be extra careful to stay healthy.  I hope you are continuing to physically (vs socially) distance yourselves so you protect everyone against “community spread” and still connect with each other by email, phone and social media.

I appreciate the feedback you’ve been sending us and have been following up as best we can.  We have gotten answers to your question on unemployment insurance concerns that “gig workers” e.g. driving for Uber are covered both under Hawaii and federal law.

Speaking of federal, the CARES Act (H.R.748)) is now law. At the last meeting of our senate special committee on COVID-19, US Senator Brian Schatz briefed us on the highlights of the Act and ensured us that the goal is to get aid as soon as possible to those needing help –from individuals to small businesses to disaster relief and medical supplies.  For details, click here.

The senate committee will meet again tomorrow (Monday) at 1pm. We will be updated by the Governor’s Chief of Staff, and the directors of the Departments of Budget & Finance, Labor & Industrial Relations, and Human Services.  See agenda. If you have questions feel free to email to me at senatormoriwaki@capitol.hawaii.gov or by responding to this email.

Also tomorrow at 10am the House select committee on COVID-19 on economic and financial preparedness will hold its informational briefing which you may view on Olelo.

Mahalo to those of you supporting our local restaurants. Unfortunately some have since closed but we have added a few we missed like Down to Earth serving take out and groceries in Kakaako and McCully-Moiliili and Hibachi Grill in Kakaako. See updated list.

Continue to stay healthy and take care of yourself, family, neighbors and community. WE can overcome COVID19 if we practice the directives of the Governor and Mayor. Stay Healthy!

Mahalo,
